EXPRESS.4 Flow with various Paths of Movment

Combining various paths of movement like the arc of a swing or line of a squat, combined with various angles of such lines like in multiplanar lunges, allows one to enter a flow with movement.

You must be present and yield but also exert and force. When these two things are in balance, we easily move and flow at the pace most achievable for our state and body.

  • Crawls

  • Climbs

  • Steps

  • Balancing

  • Jumps

  • Monkey Swings

  • Throws & Catches

  • Object Flow

  • Strikes, Sweeps, Blocks, Holds, Chi

  • Mobility - Just feeling various movements that you wish to express joint by joint or akin to dancing, yoga, intuitive stretches and flow

I highly suggest to explore these daily, because they are typically of low energy output, and can therefore be done for a longer time than most conventional linear strength movements or stretches. They are more natural, but can also be the most difficult to re-learn or practice. Once the easier progressions are practiced enough, your brain and body will naturally adapt in the moment to new obstacle demands or create new movements in that creative flow state.

Pick one to three from this list and explore today until you are having an awesome time, in flow, present with the body, breath, movement and environment.

We can of course enter a flow state through linear movement as well. It just takes becoming aware of the movement and how it feels, as well as to get in a rhythm. In National Guard Drill last weekend, I learned various physical training calls, cadences and counts which attuned me to the pace everyone was moving at. This helped me be vigilant, present, focused and also breathing appropriately. Try counting to 1 or 2 as you descend and ascend in any given linear movement. Do holds and longer descents regularly to take more time under tension but also time for awareness to calibrate to the moment.
