Gene moves origins (Abridged)
May 2021. A time of supposed return to normalcy for - at least pockets of - the world. Personally, this was a tumultuous time in my own brain, and echoed out through each decision I made that year. One of those was a wild yet wonderful solo road trip to Sedona, Arizona, which I have my reserves of stories for, including losing my wallet during a small tropical storm in New Orleans, LA (much character was shattered then rebuilt from my soil & roots up). Another was the start of a sincere mission to bridge the gap between Body-Mind-Spirit in the world of movement & training.
Gene Moves was the name that stuck. Three sources of inspiration for this name. Firstly was from my college bro & roommate named Gene, who got me into movement not just to train strength or ability, but for its own enjoyable sake (EXPRESSION). Next was the Gene Keys started by Richard Rudd - somewhat of a spiritual philosopher and poet - who took to my liking since I’ve always enjoyed authors like Emerson & Whitman. Finally, I enjoy the epigenetic theories and studies that are emerging where we are hearing the great influence of behavior and environment on our genetics.
Imagine more people who can see movement and training as a complete connection and reflection of their Body Mind Spirit - a grounds from which to create their best life. Then imagine the power of many who are empowered coming together as community. If these people truly cared and put in the WORK for their integral well being and the wellbeing of others, we would have that team of supportive, creative, complimentary individuals we often dream of.
I capitalize WORK, because this is not a wishy washy development. It is one that asks for greater investment in the practice towards such an individual and such a community. Just as falling from innocence or grace in our lives and losing part of our youthful ignorance is influential to the growth of a Hero or Heroine, we can see who truly puts the passion in action to serve others in this kind of communal ideal and see who does not just yet.
Whilst ecological, military, political, economical or social goals may be outside the scope of this Movement & Mission Community, we know that the top-down and bottoms-upwards health of our peoples and Earth is essential to always work in context to. The pandemic-era of 2020 on is a great testament to how much impact we have on eachother. If we do not WORK for our health and the health of others - without bandaids galore of pharmaceuticals and masks etc., which have their helpful purpose but temporarily - we will systematically allow ourselves to decline in collective health. This is why we see our well being as a journey, and not always a glorious one - not always enjoyable. It requires us to embark on Missions which may be uncomfortable, but are what we need to grow or get better.
Gene Moves is on a mission to empower people from their very DNA, their natural birth right to be strong, free, creative and mobile! From here we will not so much reinvent, but more so rediscover how the process becomes simpler the more we stick to the path of an integrated lifestyle. We don’t have to drop and drastically change everything, but identify then change each weakness into our strength again. Here is the GENE MOVES ETHOS.
I, Coach Grant Tamutus, have been working with people and my own body over the years in profound ways - the goal always being a combination of a strong and resilient, but free, adaptable individual. We each have unique goals, but this combination is a goal that balances the spectrum of that variance in goals. For instance, someone who is naturally more flexible may want to be stronger, but they likely still enjoy maintaining that flexiblity - now they can start to marry the best of both worlds, from which emerges a THIRD ability that can easily go both ways or hold that middle ground.
